Having Boundaries

Updated: Jul 18, 2020

This is an area that the world is all struggling with. We have gone from thinking of others first to the humanistic view of "take care of yourself, who cares about everyone else". There is a delicate balance in having healthy boundaries. This is not always something that we are taught and that is sad. I had a friend give me a book to borrow and read "Boundaries For Children" several years ago. I had poor boundaries in my personal relationships and I didn't realize it. I would say yes...give...give...and give some more and I had very little self esteem.

But how could I expect to be treated well if I didn't feel I deserved it? So started a new part of my journey that has included much learning and growth in the way I see myself and others. I had to learn to say "no" when something wasn't good for me. Not in a selfish way...but we can not "do all" and "be all" for everyone else and leave no energy to put into our own lives. Likewise we can not look only at ourselves and our needs and not be giving and thoughtful of others needs. The balance comes when we see ourselves through loving eyes and others as well. When we love others enough to put them ahead of us but not to the extent that we are taken out of our character, or used and abused. When we try to "do all and be all" what follows is burnout, frustration, and resentment of the people and things that are "taking all of our time"because we allow it. God has a balance in mind and doing things as led by Him is the best rule of thumb.

So today ask yourself, do you have good boundaries? Are you "people pleasing" or doing what is best for all involved? Sometimes saying "no" is good for the one hearing it too just remember to do all things in love. Even Jesus had good boundaries and took time for himself and his prayer life.

Ephesians 4:15 But, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the Head--Christ

Be led...act in love...and that includes loving yourself.
